Diff plug-in

The Diff plug-in is installed by default with EmEditor Professional. This plug-in compares two opened documents.

To use the Diff plug-in: make sure the tabs are enabled. When the tabs are enabled, the Enable Tabs menu item is checked on the Window menu. Open two files you want to compare. Click the Diff plug-in button on the Plug-ins bar. Or on the Tools menu, point to Plug-ins, and then click Diff. The Diff custom bar will appear.

If exactly two files are already opened in the same EmEditor window, those two files are already selected for comparison. If you have more than two files, you can select the files by clicking the > button by the file name. Click Compare to start the comparison. The list of lines, including the differences, will appear. Double-clicking an item in the list will jump to the specified line on the specified file.

To change the Custom Bar Position, right-click the Diff Plug-in button on the Plug-ins bar or in the custom bar, and select Properties. In the Diff Plug-in Properties menu, you can customize the Tab Columns option. This option allows you to set how many spaces the tab button will indent when pressed. EmEditor's default is 8 spaces per tab. Typically, if you have changed the Tab Columns option in EmEditor, you should synchronize the Tab Columns option of the Diff Plug-in with the Tab Columns option of EmEditor, since they are not automatically synchronized. You can click the Show Only Changes check box, to display only the text that is different. Click the Compare at Startup check box, to begin the comparison at the startup of the Diff Plug-in. It also begins the comparison at the startup of EmEditor, if the Diff Plug-in was open the last time EmEditor was closed.

You can customize the Font, Left Color, Right Color, and Find Color for the Diff Plug-in, to make the changes between the two documents easier to compare. To do this, right-click on the list and select the font or color you wish to change. The default colors selected are: red for the first document and yellow for the second document.

Press the F6 key or ESC key to set the keyboard focus back to the editor. Press the F7 key to go to the previous change, and the F8 key to go to the next change. Press the F3 key to find next, and the Shift+F3 key to find previous. To change the search criteria, you will need to use EmEditor Find command. Right-click on the list so you can change the font and colors.
