I see some strange behavior using this RC as well as the previous RC version. When i have wrap by character (at char 70) enabled and at some point the current line background color disappear when using the arrow keys or clicking with the mouse in the textfile. Sometime the current line color appear at the wrong line or two line at the same time while the cursor might be somewhere else. The current line color indicator might sometimes be stuck at one line as well so i have to move the cursor back to that line and away again for the current line hightlight to disappear.

Seems like i can reproduce this problem easily if i enable wrap by char (at pos 70), create a line with many words that consist of let’s say 170 characters, paste that line many times (about 14 in my case while testing) and have a blank line inbetween each line. Then if i start using the arrow keys or click around in the document, select some text, deselect and so on the current line highlight color might disappear, reappear, appear twice, be stuck on a line and so on.

By the way i’m using Windows 7 x64 and the x64 version of emditor version 9.90.26, but for some reason the about box still says version 9.90.26 rc 16. Shouldn’t that be version 9.90.26 rc 17?

I tried this RC release and have the horizontal scroll bar set to “Display only when necessary” and when i type beyond the right side of the window the horizontal scroll bar appear as i would expect. If i remove some characters or split the line into two lines so no line is beyond the right side of the window the horizontal scroll bar doesn’t disappear again. Unless i’m wrong using version 9 i believe the horizontal scroll bar used to disappear again in this case….like the description says “Display only when necessary”.

Not like this is actually a big problem, but found it worth to mention.

I would also disagree that 40$ is “almost free” ;) Especially when there are so fine freeware and open source programs.

For me, EmEditor Free is great; also are Notepad++ and Notepad2, which are both Open Source. I just wish that Notepad++ is little bit faster on start, but even now it is better than EmEditor Free (I don’t know about Pro, haven’t tried it). With Notepad2 is different – it is VERY fast, but has no tabs (not so important) and no “clickable URLs” (and I need that very often).

So, I don’t understand why EmEditor Free is not available from emeditor.com (maybe with some small improvements over time). Anyway, that would be nice for not-so-rich countries, where 40$ for “Notepad on steroids” is little bit too much :-D

Well as i said in my previous post i actually agree that the price could be lower in some countries, but for other countries where $40 is close to nothing i think it’s a fair price even if there are free alternatives. Just because freeware exists doesn’t mean that everything should be free. I’m sure someone find it worth paying for emeditor even if some other editors are free or there would be no customers. But like i said i agree that a lower price for some countries could be a good idea. If Emurasoft are located in the US i’m sure selling the editor for a very low price like $5 the income would be too low to pay the salery for their employees so might not be a good idea for the company.

Anyway i’m under the impression there will be no new version of emeditor free so i’m guessing you have to use it like it is or buy emeditor pro. I don’t know this for a fact tho….just guessing.

Actually, it depends on the country the user lives in. For example, here in Russia (except in Moscow and St. Petersburg) many people earn as much as $60/month or even less. For them $40 is anything but “close to free”.

Unfortunately, it’s a big problem that most software is sold by the same price all over the world, irregarding that in different countries there are different price and salary levels.

Well i actually agree. It might not be fair to say it’s cheap since that might not be the case for everyone like you said. I also think it would be a good idea to regulate the price in such countries, but might be a challenge to find the right sales model if the price should differ between countries. Also prevent that people from other countries try to take advantage of such a deal and pretend to be from Russia to get a lower price for the product.

For $60 a month how can they even afford a computer?

According to what i have read in the past i wouldn’t expect a new version of emeditor free. All the features requested is available in the full version and it’s only $39.99. It’s not free of course, but $39.99 is pretty close to free. You get a great editor pretty cheap and upgrades been free since version 4 unless i’m wrong. At least i never had to pay for a upgrade so far. Why not buy Emeditor prof and support the company and you get the features you want as well?

I’m pretty sure you have to stick with emeditor free and accept the lack of features or buy the full version. I’m also guessing that feature requests from paying customers have a much greater chance of being implemented.

If version 10 is to be released in the close future that’s fine, but if version 10 are months away i’m hoping for a 9.17.

    Thanks

Thank you Yutaka. Since i currently don’t use the version 10 beta, will there also be a 9.17 release where this issue is fixed?

Thank you for your reply, but the thing is that the “In the selection only” is unchecked even if i have many lines selected when i press CRTL-H for replace. I’m pretty sure it worked according to your explanation in version 9.15. Now i’m using 9.16 and there is no way i can make this checkbox selected by default no matter how many lines i have selected.

I believe the setting to turn this feature on/off isn’t really needed in my case as long as it’s working according to your explanation. Currently i can’t make it work with 9.16 though.

Edit: I did some more testing and seems like it’s working as you describe if i also have “Use selected Text in Find/Replace dialog box” selected. As soon as i uncheck the “Use selected Text in Find/Replace dialog box” setting it’s not working anymore with the automatic selection of “In the selection only”.
I would like to have the “In the selection only” checked automatically, but i don’t want the “Use selected Text in Find/Replace dialog box” enabled.

I didn’t like it either, but the fact is lots of people are confused with the default behavior. Most people expect CTRL + TAB behave like Internet Explorer and Firefox where CTRL + TAB switches to the next document (right tab). So, that is why I changed the default CTRL + TAB should go to the next document (right tab). You can change the behavior by changing the keyboard shortcut.

However, I like your opinion. I might change the default as you suggested.
Other users, what do you think?

I use CRTL-TAB to switch between the last used documents so like it the way it is in version 9, but not very important to me what is default as long as it’s easy to change. As you said Internet Explorer switch to the next tab by default, but this behavior can easily be changed in IE under “Tools -> Internet Options -> Advanced” by checking “Use most recent order when switching tabs with Crtl-Tab”. I think such a setting is a bit easier than having to change the keyboard shortcuts. Why not leave the CTRL-Tab behavior like it is in version 9 and add such a setting like in IE?

Personaly I choose EmEditor as it not require activation (comparing to other editors on purchase time) For me this was advantage over other editors, now it not

I assume you use emeditor for other reasons as well so there is still reasons why you prefer emeditor and not just because of “no activation”?

Unless i’m wrong emeditor do not have a limit how many times you can activate so should not cause a problem if you reinstall or move emeditor to a new computer. Also as Yutaka already said validation is not required so if you have no internet connection it will still work. So basically the only change since version 8 is that some info is sent to emurasoft when you enter your serial if connected to internet, but no personal info is being sent. I cannot really see how the activation should be a problem for the paying customers in this case. I have seen far worse way of implemeting activation for software.

I guess you should blame those that is too cheap to pay a few buck for this great editor.

Yes you are right it’s not actually for all open files, but if you have several files of the same type open you cannot change the wrapping for one of them only. I believe that would have been a nice feature.

I agree this should be for the single document only and not change for all open documents as well as not change the default. With the current version of emeditor change the wrap will make it default for all future doucments as well even if emeditor is restarted until you manually change it back.
It would have been nice with a default setting and possibility to change for a single open document only. When the document is closed and opened again then the default settings should be used and the change of wrapping should not affect other open documents.

Activation/validation is common for most software today and as Yutaka said it will work without a internet connection as well which is a lot more user friendly then for a lot of other software available that won’t work at all unless you activate online. Also online activation is so common today i cannot understand why anyone with a valid license would find it to be a problem. Especially in this case where online activation is not really required and no personal information is sent.
I must also add that i had no problem understanding that version 9 required a new key since this information was easy to find and really hard to miss. The process to get a new key i also found easy and fast.
I can fully understand this change and give emurasoft my full support trying to stop people from stealing their products.

Could easily be done with regular expression.

    Could search for:

    ^.*keyword.*n

and replace with nothing. That should remove all lines that contain the word “keyword”. Just change “keyword” into whatever you would like to search for.

Thank you. Since i got it working it’s no longer a problem for me, but to pin from the start menu worked fine with version 8.0x. Not sure what have changed with version 9 that changed this behavior.

Yes i tried to unpin the one i already pinned and then pin again using the newly created icon from the windows startmenu, but didn’t help. So i had to open emeditor and select pin from the opened emeditor on the taskbar that worked fine.

Unless i’m wrong .odt is related to openoffice/writer. I have no knowledge about the .odt format, but if it’s xml you can open the file using emeditor as Yutaka already said. Then you will only see the xml code. You will not be able to open the file using emeditor and see the correct layout/document content as you will see using openoffice/writer. If you need to read/edit/convert the document you need a program that is able to read the .odt format and not a text editor.

Openoffice is free and then you should be able to read the document. Also if using MS Office 2007 there is a free add-on that will read the .odt format as well. I’m sure there is some small converters as well available, but they are most likely mean’t to convert the file into another word processing format like .doc/.docx.

I often search using the regular expression “^” only and replace with something like “no ” when i want to add “no ” in front of the lines. Starting with Beta 11 the first entry found then the “no ” isn’t added in front of the line, but after the first charater. The rest of the lines is replaced correctly.

So if i have 3 lines like this:
    test
    test
    test

Then search for “^” and replace with “no ” then the result is like this:
    tno est
    no test
    no test

I just installed rc1 and the problem is still present.

Actually i would like a field to specify characters that should not be a word delimiter which is the opposite of what i asked…..sorry about that. Just a simple field where i can add all the characters that should not be word delimiters for each configuration and also the option to specify for all configurations.
The reason why this would be a nice feature is because i work with textfiles that contains a lot of special characters and IP addresses. If i doubleclick on the IP address 10.10.10.10 i would like the whole address to be selected. With the current version this is not possible because i cannot specify that “.” (dot) should be part of the word and not a word delimiter. A lot of the textfiles i work with contains commands that include special characters like “-“, “/”, “_” etc. It’s much faster for me when i use another text editor where a doubleclick can select the whole command or IP address to be able to cut/copy/paste or connect. For the IP addresses/hostnames i also have a couple of shortcut keys to start a telnet, ssh or ldap session to the IP address or hostname and then i doubleclick on the IP address and use the shortcut key to connect.
If there is any doubt i can give some examples of other text editors where this feature is available to see the behavior, but it’s pretty simple. The current version of emeditor have space and all special characeters as a word delimiter, but i would like to specify that some of these character should not be a word delimiter.

If you need further information or want me to give some more information regarding this feature please let me know.

I tested and found 7.00.7 to be pretty much faster then 7.00.5. Also faster then any other text editor i tried. There is almost no difference between case sensitive and case insensitive searching now while using 7.00.5 the difference could be pretty big.
But it seems like 7.00.8 is out now as well as 7.00.9 RC1.
