Outline

The Outline features are now included in the EmEditor core. The Outline plug-in has been deprecated. A new Outline button was added to the toolbar. Clicking on the Outline button allows you to toggle both the Outline Bar and the Outline Guide.

The Outline tool creates an expandable outline of your document, so that you can quickly switch between different sections, reorder text in the document, and expand or collapse parts of the file.

The Outline tool outlines a document in EmEditor. There are two major functions of it. The first function is outlining in the custom bar. A tree view appears when you click the Outline button on the toolbar. The second function is outlining as a guide, where Outlining appears on the left side of the editor without the custom bar.

Clicking on the Outline button will show or hide both the Outline Bar and the Outline Guide. Clicking on the right side of the button (Down arrow) will display a menu including many commands related to Outlining.

Outlining in the custom bar

A tree view appears when you click on the right side of the Outline button (Down arrow) and click on Outline Bar. Or on the View menu, click on Outline Bar. In the Outline custom bar, the outline appears as a tree. You can click on nodes to expand or collapse levels. If you click on an item in the custom bar, the main text is synchronized. You can drag and drop an item, to change the order of the text. Selecting ALT+UP or ALT+DOWN moves the selected item up or down within the tree. You can right click on an item and click Select, and the corresponding text will be selected within the main text. You can also copy an item or copy all the outline text by selecting the commands on the right-click menu of the Outline Bar.

While the keyboard focus is inside the Outline custom bar, press the F6 key or ESC key to set the keyboard focus back to the editor.

Outlining as a guide

A guide appears on the left side of the editor without the custom bar. By default this outline guide is synchronized with the custom bar when you click the Outline button. To display either the custom bar or the outlining guide, click on the right side of the button (Down arrow) and click on either Outline Bar or Outline Guide. In the main text window, when the levels are closed, they display a […] if there is more text. You can hover over the […], to view the rest of the text. You can right click and expand all or collapse all, or even expand or collapse to a specific level. Some useful keyboard shortcuts include, ALT+UP to jump up a node and ALT+DOWN to jump down a node.
