problem to select column using alt-drag

This has confounded me for a long time. I know alt-drag suppose to select a column of text. But a lot of times it just select by characters as a simple drag.

Today I finally found out the problem. If the document has no selection, alt-drag select columns as expected. If the document already has some selection, alt-drag select by characters, not column. Sound like a bug to me.
