Tools/Customize/Regular Expressions Can Match New Line Characters

What is this option usage? It puzzles me.

When searching in a document which contents a very long line, checking this option will make a search very slow.
Checking this option,Regular Expressions(.) Can NOT Match New Line Characters.
Not checking this option,Regular Expressions(n) Can Match New Line Characters too.

For this option to work, you should also set non-zero value for the Additional Lines to Search for Regular Expression option.

    But,Is it a bug?
Checking the option(Regular Expressions Can Match New Line Characters) will make some search very slow.
Event if value for the Additional Lines to Search for Regular Expression option is Zero.
