“Edit in EmEditor” appears twice in the modern context menu in Windows 11.
After uninstalling the old MSI version and installing the Microsoft Store or new MSIX version, two Edit in EmEditor entries may appear in the Windows 11 modern context menu. This is caused by a bug in some versions of the old MSI installer that may prevent the modern context menu registration from being removed during uninstallation. We apologize for the inconvenience.
If you experience this issue, follow the steps below to remove the older duplicate entry.
- In Windows Settings > Apps > Installed apps, verify that only one instance of EmEditor is installed. If an older MSI version of EmEditor remains, uninstall it.
- Open PowerShell and run the following command:
Get-AppxPackage *EmEditor* | Select-Object Name, PackageFullName, Version, InstallLocationOutput similar to the following will appear:
Name PackageFullName Version InstallLocation ---- --------------- ------- --------------- Emurasoft.EmEditor.EmEditor Emurasoft.EmEditor.EmEditor_1.0.0.0_x64__bpd82vs5ee13j 1.0.0.0 C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\Emurasoft.EmEditor.EmEditor_1.0.0.0_x64__bpd82vs5ee13j Emurasoft.EmEditor64MSIX Emurasoft.EmEditor64MSIX_26.2.9.0_x64__cwc2r2f568cgm 26.2.9.0 C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\Emurasoft.EmEditor64MSIX_26.2.9.0_x64__cwc2r2f568cgmAn entry with version 1.0.0.0 or 1.0.1.0 belongs to the old MSI version and should be removed. The entry with a version such as 26.x.x.0 belongs to the Microsoft Store or MSIX version and does not need to be removed.
- Copy the older value displayed under PackageFullName, and run the following command:
Remove-AppxPackage -Package "Emurasoft.EmEditor.EmEditor_1.0.0.0_x64__bpd82vs5ee13j"Replace the package name in this example with the actual PackageFullName shown in your PowerShell output.
- Restart Windows. Only one Edit in EmEditor entry should now appear in the modern context menu.
